Scarlett Johansson faces criticism and outrage over her upcoming role as a transgender man

LAHORE – Scarlett Johansson’s upcoming project in which she will portray a transgender man has sparked outrage from many who are opposing the idea of a cisgender actor playing a trans role. Scarlett will be starring in Rub & Tug as a prostitution ring leader Dante “Tex” Gill, who was born as a girl called Lois Jean Gill.

Critics cannot get their head around the fact that a woman is playing the role of a transgender person so how exactly would she understand the real turmoil in the life of an actual person who identifies as the opposite sex later on in life.

The question is: “Why could not they cast an actual transgender?”

The trans community and otherwise other critics as well are not comfortable with Scarlett trying to steal the light that was actually an intense phase in their lives.

Scarlett, who is also producing the film, further worsened the already sensitive scenario by choosing to state on website Bustle, via her representative, that criticism “can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment.”

Tambor, Leto and Huffman are all cisgender actors who received acclaim for playing trans characters. Tambor won two Emmys for his performance on “Transparent”. Leto won an Oscar for his performance in 2013′s “Dallas Buyers Club.” Huffman was nominated for an Oscar for the 2005 film “Transamerica.”
