ISLAMABAD – Minister for Power Omar Ayub Khan confirmed on Wednesday that there was no other option than to increase the power tariff.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, the minister said the government was finalising the increase in the price of electricity.
“There will be an increase in the price of electricity in stages over the next year and a half,” he elaborated.
The lawmaker said the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) recommended an increase in the price of electricity by Rs2 per unit, however, hastened to add that approving such recommendation would not be accepted by the public.
Ayub’s announcement came a day after he vowed to put an end to the circular debt by December 2020.
‘Nepra had recommended an increase of Rs3.84 in per unit price of electricity,’ he had said at a press briefing.
