50th death anniversary of Fatima Jinnah being observed today

LAHORE – The 50th death anniversary of Mother of the nation (Madar-e-Millat) Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah is being observed today (Sunday) with reverence across the country including Federal Capital.

In connection with the death anniversary, special programmes and talk shows are being broadcasted, while special articles and editorial were also published in newspapers regarding services rendered Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah.

Meanwhile, to pay homage to Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah, various government and private organizations have also arranged various programmes.

Fatima Jinnah, who was the younger sister of the Founder of Pakistan Quaid-e-Azam (Great Leader) worked tirelessly side by side with her brother Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali to help gather the women of sub-continent on one platform, which made the struggle for achieving a separate state for Muslims- known now as Pakistan.

She was born on July 9, 1893, while she completed a dental degree from the University of Calcutta in 1923. She became a close associate and an adviser to her older brother Muhammad Ali Jinnah who later became the founder and first Governor General of Pakistan. A strong critic of the British Raj, she emerged as a strong advocate of the two nation theory and a leading member of the All-India Muslim League.

She was laid to rest next to her brother, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, in Karachi on July 9 1967. She remains one of the most honored leaders in Pakistan, with nearly half a million people attending her funeral in Karachi.

The Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif said for her struggle we draw lessons of sacrifice, and unconditional support for a noble cause.

He said today Pakistan provides women with equal opportunities of all sorts and an enabling environment to serve the motherland in every field.-Online
