US special envoy calls on FM Qureshi to hold talks on Afghan peace process

ISLAMABAD – A special envoy of the United States met Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi to dicuss the reconciliation process in neighouring Afghanistan today (Tuesday).

US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad held talks with senior Pakistani officials during his visit to Islamabad.

The diplomat met with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi who reiterated his country’s efforts for achieving peace in Afghanistan.

Khalilzad arrived in Pakistan after visiting Afghanistan where he met with government leaders and called on parties to the conflict to form their negotiating teams.

He also met Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua for delegation-level talks attended by security, defence, and diplomatic officials from both countries.

Khalilzad was appointed as US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation last month. His mission is to coordinate and lead US efforts to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table.

He is set to travel to UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia after leaving Pakistan.
