KARACHI (Web Desk) – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, on Wednesday, laid the foundation stone of the Karachi- Lahore Motorway project in Karachi.
PM sharif, while addressing the ground breaking ceremony, announced that development has been his top priority since came into power. “First motorway project was started in Pakistan during 1991 under the same leadership”.
He also extended his wishes to end the electricity shortfall during his ongoing tenure. We are working for put our plans into reality, he added.
For this purpose, ten thousand megawatts of electricity would be added to the national grid by then. He said 3600 MW would be generated through imported LNG while there are also plans for import of 4000 MW from China. Steps are being taken for installation of power plants based on Thar coal.
He wishes to construct a motorway that would link Peshawar to Kabul. He said he talked to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in this regard who expressed his readiness for collaboration with Pakistan for its construction.
He said resources are being mobilized for launching of Hyderabad-Sukkur portion of Karachi-Lahore Motorway. Sukkur-Multan portion is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and work on this section would begin soon. FWO would take up construction of Multan-Lahore section of the motorway.
He expressed the confidence that construction of a network of motorways would help promote national unity and solidarity.
Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad and Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah received the premier at the airport and accompanied him during the ceremony.
In the first phase, the motorway will be constructed from Karachi to Hyderabad and will stretch to Lahore as part of the M-9 project.
The motorway is expected to cost Rs 36 billion and will be completed in 30 months.
Earlier news channels had reported the incidents of violence in Karachi after Rangers raided the MQM’s headquarter to arrest the wanted criminals.
