At least 34 dead, 864 houses destroyed in Afghanistan floods

KABUL – Flash floods caused by heavy rain in the past week have killed at least 34 people in several Afghan provinces and caused serious damage to property and livestock, State Ministry for Natural Disaster Management (SMNM) said on Tuesday.

The flooding, hitting Samangan, Takhar, Kapisa, Baghlan, Badakhshan, Badghis, Panjsher and Ghazni provinces had caused serious damage to around 900 houses, killed hundreds of cattle and damaged agricultural land, according to Pajhwok Afghan News.

The floods, which came after an unusually dry winter that has led to drought in many areas, underline Afghanistan’s vulnerability to natural disasters.

The rugged mountainous terrain and the lack of roads mean it is often difficult to evaluate relief needs.

Some affected people in Parwan and Sar-I-Pul provinces have received aid and cash money.

The SMNM said that a survey for identifying affected families in the mentioned provinces was underway and those who suffered losses or displaced as result of the floods would receive aid.
