ECP summons Pervez Khattak, Ayaz Sadiq and Fazlur Rehman for using offensive language

ISLAMABAD – Amid the soaring political temperature ahead of polls, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday leaders of country’s prominent political parties for allegedly using foul language against rivals during campaigning.

The electoral body has issued notices to leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Jamat-e-Islami -Fazl (JUI-F).

Former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Pervez Khattak, ex-speaker of National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq and former head of Kashmir committee Fazlur Rehman have been summoned on July 21.

The ECP, in a suo motu notice, directed them to appear before its four-member bench. “The notice has been taken on the basis of media reports,” it added.

Earlier today, PTI chief Imran Khan’s counsel Babar Awan appeared before the ECP bench in the same kind of case. The electoral body had summoned Khan using foul words during electioneering.

Khan speaking to supporters had said whoever goes to receive former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz upon their arrival at the airport are ‘donkeys.’

Presenting arguments, Awan said that the word donkey is a normal and common word that is even used by teachers in the classroom.

To drive the point home, he also showed video clips of PML-N member and former speaker National Assembly, Ayaz Sadiq, using foul language against the PTI. He lamented the fact that the PTI leader had to face abuse himself, being given titles like ‘Taliban Khan’ and ‘Yahoodi.’

The ECP, however, barred the PTI chief from using offensive language for rival political parties during the election campaign. The members of the bench also made Awan to submitted a written assurance, stating that Imran Khan would abide by the instruction issued by the ECP.
