ISLAMABAD – Justice (r) Wajihuddin Ahmed has resigned from the basic membership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, according to local media reports.
Wajihuddin turned in his resignation to PTI Chairman Imran Khan, but did not mention a reason behind his resignation. It is unclear whether Imran Khan has accepted his resignation or not.
Party’s spokesman Naeemul Haq on Sunday ruled out the need of Wajihuddin’s resignation, saying that his membership had already been revoked due to his passive role in party affairs.
Wajihuddin Ahmad, who is a retired senior justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, human rights activist, was at odd with the party chairman Imran Khan over intra-party election process.
Earlier, he served as the party’s election tribunal head. He was tasked to head a commission in 2013 to investigate “irregularities” in PTI’s intra-party elections that took place before the general election in the same year.
He developed differences with party leadership over implementation of recommendations made by the tribunal.
In August last year, Khan suspended Wajihuddin Ahmad’s basic party membership for discussing party matters publicly, after which he presented a seven-point charter calling for the ouster of Jahangir Tareen, Pervaiz Khattak, Aleem Khan and Nadir Leghari from the PTI.
Wajihuddin alleged that the party was being run like a ‘mafia’ without any institutional checks and balances.
He was also unhappy with resignation of Tasneem Noorani as PTI Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
