LAHORE – Woman student of Punjab University has won a 17-year-long legal battle against the varsity administration for bringing her disrespect and affecting her study, BBC reported on Tuesday.
Wajiha Arooj, 38, who now resides in Canada was a student of masters at the English department almost two decades ago and was wrongly marked absent in an exam announcing her fail.
When Arooj approached the administration, she faced bizarre comments implying that she probably not come to the campus on that day which led to a barrage of speculation in the department as well in family.
“At one point I was so distressed I even considered committing suicide,” BBC quoted the victim.
The victimised student was hurriedly married off by the family in order to avoid disrespect in society. After marriage, she settled in Canada with her husband ever since.
Today, the Lahore High Court (LHC) announced verdict in favour of the victim and directed the university to Rs 0.8 million to the family in damages.
Spokesperson for the university said that the administration would challenge the verdict, if it is in the right.
