THE HAGUE – Former chief justice of Pakistan, Tassaduq Hussain Jillani was awarded the International Justice Excellence Award at The Hague on Thursday.
While receiving the award, Jillani said he was honoured and humbled adding that the award does not belong solely to him.
“This award is symbolic of the values and principles that define a judge’s odyssey for dispersion of justice. It is an acknowledgement and a reminder that the values that make justice excellence possible are shared across the globe,” the former top judge said.
Jillani opined that the award was also a testimony to some of the challenges faced by judges in the pursuit of their holy mission.
The former chief justice expressed that judges have two major functions to perform in a democracy with first to keep the three articles of the state within their bounds and second to enforce the rule of law and fundamental rights in socio-economic culture.
The International Institute for Justice Excellence said in a press release that Justice Jillani has received the award for his outstanding contribution to the global elevation of principles of justice in Pakistan and the international community.
Justice (retd) Jillani served as the 21st Chief Justice of Pakistan from 2013 to 2014. He is currently serving as an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.
Justice Jillani was amongst the judges who refused to take oath after former president Musharraf declared an emergency in 2007.
