KABUL – The Taliban that now rules Afghanistan has restricted barbers from trimming, people’s beards in Helmand area, besides announcing punishment for people who violate the rule.
Reports in international media cited that salons in the Helmand province have put notices to alert people about the stern rule under the new Afghan government, while some barbers in the country’s capital also mentioned similar rules.
Taliban, who recently re-imposed hand amputations and public executions, said that shaving facial hair violates their ‘interpretation of Islamic law’. The notice stated, “No one has a right to complain”.

A number of hairdressers speaking with news outlets mentioned that they received a call from someone who claimed to be a government official. The officials warned them to stop following ‘western styles’.
The move recalled the previous era of the Taliban in which the administration punished people over flamboyant hairstyles while by the end of the Taliban era, many Afghans used to have clean-shaven looks beside having fashionable haircuts.
Meanwhile, some claimed that many of the customers also got feared and they don’t shave their beards to avoid being targeted by the Taliban business has dried up in recent times despite hair saloons dropped the prices.
