Winnie Harlow is representing different standards of what people traditionally consider beauty with grace. 23 year old model wrote an essay in which she opened about how she still struggles achieve looks with stylists and make up artists who still can’t go about her skin tone and hair type though she has done a number of editorial shoots and walks. She gave an example of how if a hairdresser has once worked with a black model won’t know all the black hair types.
Even with wide range of beauty products offering variety of skin tone like Fenty and Dior with Tarte and colorpop working their way up there are still makeup artists who don’t have products which will fit her skin tone and the darker tones like hers. She wrote who makeup artists should know how to work with darker skin tones without making them grey or ashy.
Winnie has Vitiligo and she doesn’t sees it as a suffering. She proves a point by owning up to who she is and states even if a person has a pimple thats not even suffering! “It’s vedy rude for anyone to describe me as a sufferer, and it takes away from everything else— I’m 100 percent excelling in everything i do.”
However she is proud of how slow and steady the industry is representing people of colour, all shapes and body sizes. She never imagined seeing anyone with Vitiligo or freckles on the covers of magazine and this is something to look forward to, the change.
