Key Sessions On Constitutional Amendments Delayed Indefinitely As Govt Fails To Woo Fazl

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s ruling alliance failed to table constitutional amendment bill in National Assembly as session was delayed.

Sources familiar with development said the postponement is due to the government’s failure to secure the backing of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) chief Fazlur Rehman.

The bill, which proposes the establishment of a constitutional court and several other key amendments, will now be tabled in the National Assembly in 10-12 days. The ruling coalition has been unable to convince Rehman to support the bill, as he has expressed concerns about rushing such significant changes and requested more time to review the proposed reform of the Judicial Commission.

The federal government remains confident that the bill can pass without the support of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members. Despite prolonged discussions, Rehman has recently shifted his stance, leading to further delays.

Fazl and other parties advised delaying the bill’s judicial clauses. A recent meeting with JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidari revealed that JUI-F had not yet received the draft amendments. Haidari has called for patience and cautioned against hasty presentation of the bill to Parliament
