Former PM Abbasi, others placed on ECL

ISLAMABAD – The interior minister has placed the names of seven people, including former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and former finance minister Miftah Ismail, on the Exit Control List (ECL), it emerged on Friday.

The ministry said the decision was taken on the recommendation of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), in a letter dated April 9, 2019.

Others who will face travel restrictions include Mubin Saulat, Shahid Islamuddin, Imran-ul-Haq, OGRA chief Uzma Adil Khan, and Aamer Naseem.

The ministry’s letter states that the accused face charges of misuse of authority and causing losses to the national kitty to the tune of Rs36.969 billion.

The former premier Abbasi is accused of illegally awarding a 15-year contract for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal when he was the petroleum minister in Nawaz Sharif’s cabinet; the case was closed by NAB in 2016 but was reopened in 2018, however, the Pakistan Muslim League leader disputes the allegations.
