LAHORE- Female students at the Lahore University of Management Sciences staged a protest against a Facebook group, of mostly men, that shared content targeting women at the university with derogatory language, images, commentary and obscenity. Student took screenshots of the content and shared it to various social media platforms.

More than 200 students, mostly women, sat outside the office to register their protest and demand action to be taken against the misogyny that prevails on campus/online, and Twitter again applauded them for not giving up.

This incident also prompted one woman to share her on-campus harassment story to demonstrate that this disturbing behaviour goes unnoticed and undisciplined in many universities.

This is not the first time the campus has become ensnared in controversy on women’s rights. The university met with strong opposition when it started its first feminist club, FemSoc. And later, when a harassment case was reported against one of the law professors five years ago a similar reaction erupted. Following this case, LUMS devised its sexual harassment policy, however it is unclear if it covers online behaviours. Pakistan’s cybercrime law and the HEC’s harassment policy, however, do.
