Contraceptive app under fire after more than three dozen users experienced unplanned pregnancies

STOCKHOLM – A Swedish hospital has reported that a contraceptive app ‘Natural Cycle’ has caused about 37 unwanted pregnancies, with women soughting out abortion facilities due to the same contraceptive app.

Södersjukhuset hospital in Stockholm has reported the app to Medical Products Agency, the Swedish government agency for regulation and surveillance of drugs and medical devices.

An official from the hospital told a local news tabloid, “We have a duty to report all side effects, such as pregnancies, to the Medical Products Agency.”

If the claims of unwatned pregnancies match with the findings, this could turn into a serious matter for ‘Natural Cycles’ planning to pursue approval of FDA.

‘Natural Cycles’ was launch in 2014 and has 700,000 users worldwide. It measures woman’s body temperatures, and takes in factors like sperm survival rates and past menstruation cycles for predicting ovulation cycles. The app can also be used for getting pregnant.
