Asia Bibi s lawyer leaves Pakistan amid life threats

ISLAMABAD  – Saiful Mulook, the lawyer who advocated on behalf of Asia Bibi in the Supreme Court, left the country on Saturday, citing threats to his life.

In a brief interaction with media, the lawyer expressed that he needs to stay alive as he has to fight the legal battle for Asia Bibi adding that in the current scenario, it was not possible for him to live in Pakistan.

The 62-year-old, who left for Europe, expressed that the outcry in the country was unfortunate but not unexpected.

Expressing that the struggle for justice must continue, the lawyer expressed dismay at the agreement signed between the protesters and government saying the government could not even implement the order of the highest court.

Mulook continued that the life of Asia Bibi would be more or less the same, either inside a prison or in solitary confinement for security fears until a decision on the appeal is made by the apex court.

Asia Bibi was acquitted in the blasphemy case by the supreme court on Wednesday, following which hundreds of protesters blocked thoroughfares across the country; the demonstrators called for the death of the judges and those who helped acquit Bibi.

However, on Friday night, the Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan party (TLP) announced an end to mass protests after striking a deal with the government.

A five-point agreement, signed by both parties, said the government would not object to an appeal of the verdict, filed earlier in the Supreme Court and would take measures for placing Asia’s name on Exit Control List.
