ISLAMABAD (Sarfraz Ali) – Prime Minister Shahid Khaan Abbasi asserted on Monday that Pakistan remained committed to playing its role in global efforts for tackling the issue of climate change.
Addressing the audience at the ‘Science Policy Conference on Climate Change’ in Islamabad, the premier expressed that climate change had become one of the biggest challenges for mankind today.
‘Climate woes have united the international community for action against its hazards,’ observed PM Abbasi.
He continued that Pakistan had ratified the Paris Agreement on Climate Change in 2015 and was following the principles therein to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent.
‘Pakistan had a National Environment Policy and had also allocated eight percent of its budget to fight the effects of climate change’ noted premier Abbasi.
He continued that the recent prevalence of smog in the country serves as an eye-opener to be more serious about the issue of environment.
The legislator noted that Pakistan had a zero import of furnace oil and was running the related power houses on imported liquefied natural gas adding that in near future, all the furnace oil-based power plants of the country would no longer be running on furnace oil.
Besides the premier, Federal Minister for Climate Change Mushahidullah Khan also spoke on the occassion and highlighted the efforts of his ministry to tackle the climate change issues.
The three-day international conference on climate change is expected to attract more than 140 scientists from all over the world apart from over 200 stakeholders from various groups, government officials, businessmen, civil society members, media persons, lawyers, parliamentarians and affected communities who would be sharing their views and experiences regarding the global issue.
