ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Wednesday conducted Senate election on 37 vacant seats meanwhile eleven Senators from Punjab have already been elected unopposed.
The voting for the 37 seats concluded at 5PM after it was started at 9am. A total of 72 candidates contested the 2021 Senate polls from the federal capital and the three provinces – Sindh, Balochistan and KP – whereas no polling was held in Punjab as all the candidates were elected unopposed last week.
In Punjab, PML-N and PTI bagged five seats each while the PML-Q won one seat.

In Islamabad, PDM’s joint candidate Yousaf Raza Gillani served a major blow to the PTI as he defeated the ruling party’s candidate Abdul Hafeez Sheikh in a tough contest.
A total of 72 candidates are contesting the 2021 Senate polls from the federal capital and the three provinces whereas there will be no polling in Punjab as all the candidates were elected unopposed last week.

Islamabad
The National Assembly has 342 seats and the ruling party holds 157 seats, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz 83, Pakistan People’s Party 55, 15 MMA, MQM-P 7, BAP 5, PML-Q 4, BNP 4, GDA 3, AML 1, ANP 1, JWP 1, and four are independent members.
Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf’s Abdul Hafeez Sheikh and PDM’s Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani are contesting for the general seat in the federal capital whilst PTI’s Fauzia Arshad and PML-N’s Farzana Kausar are vying for the women seat.
Sindh
There are a total of 168 members in the Sindh Assembly. Elections will be held on seven vacant general seats of the senate from Sindh. Each party would need 22 votes at least to get a Senator elected from the general seat.
Ten candidates are contesting in Sindh Assembly including Pir Sadaruddin Shah of GDA, Taj Haider of, Jam Mahtab Hussain Dahar, Dost Ali Jessar, Saleem Mandviwalla, Shahadat Awan, Sheher Bano Sherry Rehman, Sadiq Ali Memon of Pakistan People’s Party, and Syed Faisal Ali Subzwari of MQM-Pakistan, and Faisal Vawda of the ruling party
Saifullah Abro of PTI, Farood Hamid Naek, Karim Ahmed Khawaja of PPP, Yasha Ullah Khan of TLP are contesting for technocrat/Aalim seats
Women candidates include PPP’s Palwasha Mohammad Zai Khan and Rukhsana Parveen, Khalida Ateeb of MQM-Pakistan.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
At least 145-member would elect 11 senators, seven on general seats, two each on technocrats and women seats, and one on a minority seat.

Dost Muhammad Khan and Muhammad Humayun Mohmand of PTI are contesting on Technocrats/Ulema seat. Other candidates include ANP’s Shukat Jamal Amirzadah and Farhat Ullah Babar of PPP and JIP’s Muhammad Iqbal Khalil.
Ruling party’s Sania Nishtar and Falak Naz are contesting on women seats while other candidates include ANP’s Tasleem Begum Inayat Begum of JIP, Naeema Kishwar Khan JUI-P
ANP’s Asif Bhatti, Javed Gill of JIP, Ranjeet Singh of JUIP, and PTI’s Gurdeep Singh are contesting on non-Muslim seats.
Balochistan
26 candidates remain in the field after the withdrawal of nomination papers by various candidates.
The 165-member Balochistan Assembly would elect 11 senators, seven on general seats, two each on technocrats and women seats, and one on a minority seat.
Punjab
All candidates from Punjab have been elected unopposed on February 26. PML-N’s Afnanullah Khan, Sajid Mir and Irfanul Haq, PTI’s Aoun Abbas, Aijaz Chaudhry, Saifullah Niazi, and PML-Q’s Kamil Ali Agha were elected on general seats.
PML-N’s Azam Nazir Tarar and PTI’s Barrister Ali Zafar were elected on technocrat’s seats while women’s seats were taken by ruling party’s Dr. Zarqa and PML-N’s Sadia Abbasi.
