Indian Business Tycoon Ratan Tata Passes At 86

MUMBAI – Indian business leader and ex-chairman of Tata Group passed away at 86, the conglomerate officials announced late Wednesday.

The scion of India’s pioneering business conglomerate was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital where he breathed his last. He was said to be critical in recent days, but the medical illness remains under wraps.

Day of Mourning in Maharashtra as govt announces State Funeral

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced national flag will be flown at half-mast on October 10 in mourning.

The mortal remains of Mr Tata will be on public display at National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai, with last rites in Worli later. Final rites will be after 3pm today.

Under his watch, Tata Group became one of largest companies in Asia with over $100 billion in annual revenue, and made significant acquisitions including Jaguar, Land Rover, and Tetley.

Condolences started pouring in from across the world while Indian PM Modi remembered him as “visionary,” Tata was known for his modesty and philanthropic spirit.

Ratan got his formal education at Cornell University NYC and joined family business in early 60s. Despite facing controversy in 2016 over the ousting of successor Cyrus Mistry, Tata was beloved for his simplicity and love for dogs, as well as for championing the Nano car, a budget vehicle in world most populated country.
